Frank Farquharson has extensive experience in hydrology and water resource assessment and development and has worked extensively in the UK and Europe and also throughout Africa, the Indian sub-continent, south-east Asia and the Middle East for the past 39 years. He worked as a hydrologist for Thames Water Authority for two years on groundwater augmentation schemes and development of real-time flood forecasting systems. Until 2006, he worked for the Institute of Hydrology at Wallingford in the UK (now called the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology), initially as part of the team responsible for publication of the UK Flood Studies Report in 1975, and subsequently on a wide range of applied hydrological problems worldwide. He has specialised in flood estimation and real-time flood forecasting studies, and on water resource assessment and management projects over a wide range of climates.

  • Hydrologist within System Integrator consultants supporting Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Nepal. Responsible for specification and procurement of hydrological equipment.
  • World Bank funded Hydrology Project in India (2008-13). Responsible for specification procurement of hydrometric equipment. Also responsible for assisting participating States undertake a series of applied studies.
  • Technical team leader of a study to develop a new water release and abstraction policy for Lake Victoria Basin in Africa to replace the ‘Agreed Curve’ release policy.
  • Review of designs of Songwe Lower Dam and associated irrigation scheme, Tanzania and for estimation of climate change impacts on water resources and hydropower potential across SADC region of Africa.
  • Project leader of an EU funded project to help national water resources agencies in Africa, Chile and Khazakstan develop integrated water resource management plans and encourage implementation of the EU Water Initiative.
  • Project leader for SADC-HYCOS project. Installation of hydrometric equipment at 50 river gauging stations in 10 countries of SADC which report data back in real time using data collection platforms via METOESAT.
  • Flood estimation studies in Indonesia, Somaliland, Georgia and Azerbaijan
  • Flood estimates for protection of existing Sangachal oil & gas terminal in Azerbaijan & for its proposed expansion and for a major new gas terminal in Central Oman.
  • Implementation of real-time flood forecasting systems in UK, Indonesia, India and Hong Kong.
